Useful plant parts :
Heartwood, leaf, bark and seed
Uses in traditional medicine :
- Young leaves are prepared as a salad for diabetic patients to reduce blood glucose levels
- Decoction of heartwood is taken for haemorrhages as an haemostatic
- Bark and leaves act as an astringent and aphrodisiac and are used in colonorrhoea, haematuria, ulcers and pharyngopathy
- Seeds are astringent, cooling, aphrodisiac, suppurative, antiemetic and febrifuge, used to treat burning sensations, hyperdypsia, vomiting, fever and giddiness

Chemical constituents:
Chitinases from seeds; lactone: pavonin from plant; fatty acids: linoleic, oleic and lignocerotic acids and stigmasterol from seed oil
Bioactivity :
Extracts of seeds: hypotensive, blood cholesterol lowering, anti-inflammatory, analgaesic, antihyperglycaemic, lipid lowering; decoction prepared from bark: antioxidative
