Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Root and leaf

Uses in traditional medicine :

Root infusion is given to strengthen the kidney and urinary system
Roots act as an emmenagogue and are given in amenorrhea and dysmenorrhoea
Leaves and stem posses demulcent properties and are used to treat gonorrhoea
Leaf juice is used for menstrual disorders, rheumatism and sinusitis

Chemical constituents:

Acidic polysaccharide composed of 1,2-linked α-L-rhamnopyranose and 1,4- or 1,3-linked α-D-galacturonic acid residues from root bark; alkaloid: abromine from roots

Bioactivity :

Whole plant powder with Curcuma longa: antihyperglycaemic, hypolipidaemic; aqueous extract of plant: hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolaemic; seed oil: antifungal, antibacterial, phytotoxic
